Sure, it’s September, but your HVAC system is still working hard.

It's Not the Heat, It's the Humidity! 3 Ways the Right HVAC System Can Prevent Damage from Humidity

Moisture as a result of humidity is a form of water damage. Humidity levels higher than 60% can cause mold and mildew. Depending on the amount and intensity of exposure, the scope of the problem can range in severity. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that most humidity damage takes time to manifest and often goes unnoticed by residents. A fully functional HVAC system can serve as an important preventative measure against this type of problem.

1. Regulating the indoor environment. HVAC systems create a stable indoor atmosphere, complete with temperature control and frequent air circulation. These two factors can prevent moisture from affecting surfaces in your home. Walls and ceiling that sustain water damage are often visibly affected and the stains can be difficult to reverse.

2. Microbial growth thrives in humidity. An effective HVAC system will sustain air circulation and eliminate humidity. These conditions are notorious for nurturing spore growth. Mold and mildew are very threatening to residents and visitors alike; prolonged exposure can affect respiratory function and immune system responses. High humidity or dampness must be isolated and eliminated as soon as possible.

3. Structural damage. Damage from humidity is not surface deep. In addition to causing a variety of other issues, humidity can affect beams and floorboards. Wood that has been exposed to humidity can become swollen with moisture and permanently warped. Humidity may also weaken the exposed surfaces and lead to small-scale collapse if the pressure becomes too great.
